Earthly pursuits

What did you do as a child that made the hours pass like minutes? Herein lies the key to your earthly pursuits.

Carl Jung

Well that’s an easy one. I drew, and made things. Around six to eight years of age I was fascinated with the idea of watches – so I made my own, out of cardboard and paper and paper clips for hands. I still remember is the satisfaction of having made something.

I had cousins who were seriously into Scalextric slot cars: their racetrack took over their lounge-room and spilled out into the hallway. I just couldn’t understand the attraction. I found more joy in drawing or lying in the grass watching the little blue butterflies that visited the clover flowers. Or finding snails for the bearded dragon that lived in our back yard. And mostly I drew, copying pictures from Look and Learn magazine or objects around the house or, strangely, heraldic symbols and devices from middle age Britain.

Later one of my cousins bought a burnt-out Holden Brougham and rebuilt it. His brother became a panel beater. So, following their childhood passion.

I wonder how many of us lose sight of that child-hood joy? Does that perhaps contribute to some people’s dissatisfaction with their life?
